Re: New Kingston Arms swords!
Be careful with Kingston swords if you plan on cutting with them. I have the XIV and love it, but the first one I had bent right where the blade meets the guard. CAS replaced it and the new one is totally fine, but I gave it a serious once over to make sure. Kingston's QC is super hit or miss. If I ...

Re: Dwarven Coat
It looks like a Russ coat with an off-set/overlap front that's a little low in the collar. Like a combo of this: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1565/1123/products/17052021jd6k_537x537.jpg?v=1622114238 And this: https://i.pinimg.com/236x/17/38/9d/17389d64b4cff9948146d8d0dc582c70--viking-costume-vi...

Re: Elvish knives of the Ainu
The shapes are very organic and look not just pleasing but also very functional. Which makes sense for daily use tools. I really like them. I'd of course skip any of the carving presented if making a version for an elven impression. Don't want to go repurposing someone else's religious or spiritual ...

Beautiful work!
And I must say, the Castellan is my all-time favorite Albion. Great score there!

Re: Wrap Pants
These were super popular in the mid to late 90s in the boho-hippie crowd. They were called Thai Fisherman pants at the time.
They're interesting. Kind of like un-pleated, open sided hakama.

Re: Participating in Middle Earth and Where We Fit
As an ex-SCAdian, the fact you listed the SCA as soft LARP and not soft reenactment gave me a chuckle. They really want to be the latter, but in many ways they're very much the former. It's a good list. Not exhaustive but a great outline of ideas. This description is narrowly pointed at for people ...

Re: Lemme AXE you a question
The more I look at it, the more I realize that using the word "tomahawk" was a mistake. A tomahawk is only one example of an axe that has a head attached by sliding it up the shaft. This is what I get for posting while on a break at work 😔 (All cats are mammals, not all mammals are cats......

Re: Lemme AXE you a question
I'm all for easy, carving two or three inches of wood to fit in a hole in a bit of metal is easier then carving 15 to 18 inches of wood to fit through a hole in a bit of metal. A notch and wedge isn't that hard to do even if you only have a knife. You're not wrong. I think that I kind of get hung u...

Re: Lemme AXE you a question
Sorry, "tomahawk" is the only nomenclature I know for a hatchet that has the pole go through the eye from top to bottom vs an axe that is bottom to top. As I understand it, using these kinds of names for things is a modern proclivity. I'm sure regardless of attachment method, our ancestors...

Re: Lemme AXE you a question
That's a great example! Very handy looking.
Is the eye tapered? I imagine that, worst case happens, if it is you could re-haft it by flipping it and making it into a tomahawk.

Experimental archeology at its finest! It stinks that you had a rough go, but what you learned from it is valuable not just for you but for the members here that have not had the chance to head out themselves. Thank you for that. And I have to admit, something about pictures 4-6 got me in my feeling...

Lemme AXE you a question
So! You've decided to take an chopping implement with you into the wild. With that said! My internal debate: Axe or tomahawk? The advantage of the axe is that you can have a nice, contoured handle that fits your preference and needs. The disadvantage being that if that handle breaks in the field you...

Re: Swedish media group buys Middle-earth Enterprises
I agree, Zaentz and his corporate heirs would sell their grandmother, but I suspect this company may try and develop what is, in my humble opinion, the antithesis of the Professor's work: a theme park. OOOH, "Going down to Goblin Town" - an underground roller coaster that plays that song ...
