Re: No stupid questions? Challenge accepted!

I wouldn't go to a living history event in JRRT kit. It's not in the spirit if the event as much as I may wish it were. :'( here in the UK there is no choice. Ren Fairs are not a thing, historical re-enactment fairs are basically all you get so I show up at them in MERF kit, I have been heavily cri...

Re: Good Low-Magic TTRPG Systems?

I've been looking into Fate as well. It looks interesting, but I think I would have to test it in person one-on-one a few times with someone before I felt running a campaign with it. I actually have a 5e campaign that's a total homebrew world based off of a diceless game I ran long ago. It's not sup...

Re: No stupid questions? Challenge accepted!

Sure at a "walk through the ages" history fair I can see MERS not fitting in, but a ren faire? If head to foot leather and pirate shows and fairy ears fit in, I can't see what MERS wouldn't. Heck, one of the most magical moments ever I remember at a fair when I was little was meeting fore...

Re: Clothes vs Costume

Everything Greg said. And +1for sleeping sitting upright. On a canoe trip recently we abandoned our 'comfy' shelter to sit propped against a bank near the fire and were much more comfortable. If you haven't tried it then I recommend it. Just wanted to add a note to the sitting-up sleeping: I too en...

Re: Question on intro bows

The spouse and I picked up a couple of PSE Snake bows. They're 25lb basic target bows. They run pretty inexpensive at around $70 USD and are ambidextrous. Good for training technique without breaking the bank. Got some Wilson grip tape and some cheapo arrows and thwipped away!

Withdrawn.
I wound up sending them back. We'll see if the maker can get it right this time.

Re: Boots

-Tom The size is only part of the problem. He used the wrong leather and changed the shape without checking with me, so they don't look like what I actually ordered. Also, they're so tight that I can't put them on unless I'm either wearing dress socks or no socks. There's no stretching to be had at ...

Boots-Withdrawn

Anyone have really big feet and want some custom boots? I ordered these from an Etsy seller and they don't work for me. He didn't follow instructions and the fit isn't as good as I'd hoped. I have GIANT feet. I wear a US 13/14, EU46/47. These are a hair snug with dress weight socks on. https://imgur...

Re: What are your LEAST FAVORITE outdoor pests?

At this point, Tics. I'm originally from the Pacific NW in the US. Mosquitos were really the main outdoor pest out there. I've moved to a region of the US where they have tic warnings at playgrounds. *Shudder* yuck.

Re: Cotton in the Far East and south

I'm personally of the opinion that things like tarps, ground cloths, etc. should be made of things that are affordable. Natural, yes. No need to bust out the plastic! But as far as expense goes, I don't think you'd every catch me using a linen, hemp, or silk tarp. XD

Re: The Pennsic War

Your ranger kit would fit in fine, but be aware swords are almost never carried, for various reasons. Everyone does have a knife. West Coast SCAdians would tend to disagree, at least circa AS30 ;) Which part? The kit, the sword or the knife? :-) I'm so sorry, I was completely unclear there! I meant...

Re: First post... First piece of kit

Welcome to the forum! That's an excellent piece of kit there. I like your choice of stars and the lines of both the stamped tooling and the shape are very nicely done. And as far as modern bits and bobs go, Safety First. No one is going to give someone a hard time for taking modern items for safety'...

Re: Rugged Silk?

Thanks for the replies. :) I do know that 4-ply silk is heavier due to the threads being 4 regular ones twisted into an extra thick one. So 4-ply is heavier. I've also found 40mm silk. MM being the measurement of weight the way that many linens are measured in ounces. I just wasn't sure if the more ...
