Re: Ultimate Ranger Cloak
You know, I've been meaning to show you guys this project: I recently tried to make a cloak specifically for cold-and-wet weather, which is what it always seems to be doing when I go out in kit. It came out more of a poncho, but it works. Rectangular cloak, 7 ft. by 4 ft., with a head-hole and hood ...

Re: Star Broaches!!
If you are still taking orders, and if it's not to late, and if it won't screw up the batch order or something, I'd like to chime in.
1 steel for me, please.

Re: cloak material
Summer weight, if you want it water-PROOF, I'd say oilskin.

"Ranger Basics" Video
I came across this video recently, made by "Fili" and "Kili" of "The Happy Hobbit." (These are the same two ladies reacting to the Hobbit trailer in the video that recently went viral.) sCVpRTQad50 The info (and her Ranger kit) is basic, but still, it's great to see oth...

Re: What Should a Ranger Carry?
As for a frying pan, I'm still in the market for something that I feels fits the bill. Sam's frying pans were small, lightweight, made of (obviously) period materials, and the handles folded up, allowing one to fit into the other. I don't need two pans, but I feel like I should find a historically ...

Winterfall
A short story, told in my usual long-winded style. I had left it unfinished for nearly a year, but a conversation with Mirimaran (and a reminder of Robert E. Howard's lifespan) inspired me to complete it tonight. Hot off the presses, let me know what you think. Winterfall 14th of Hithui, 2911 of th...

Re: Viewer's Comments - Spoilers Welcome, be Warned
Can I just say that Martin is my new favorite straight-man actor? Whether here or in the BBC's "Sherlock," when something crazy happens, he has such a great "What the what now?" face. He was the perfect casting choice for Bilbo.

Re: Orcrist Pics
It kinda does... It looks like if Glamdring was cut in half down the center: one quillion, the true edge curved as though it was a double-edged leaf-blade, etc.Jonathan B. wrote:See in and of it's self it's fine, but as Orcrist is the sister sword of Glamdring it should look atleast a little bit like Glamdring.

Re: A question about packs.
I'm in the process of making an oilskin-and-wood external-frame large backpack for extended treks. I'm making the frame out of maple sapling, so it won't be as light as my aluminum-frame rucksack, but I'm hoping the better weight distribution will balance out the added weight. (We'll see...)
Re: Tinware ?
I'll admit, a tin or copper corn boiler was on my wish list for many years... But these days, now that I think about it, there ain't nothing wrong with my stainless steel Girl Scout pot. A corn boiler would be better for solo treks, but I almost never trek solo, and it's nice to have something a lit...

Re: Storing gear and kit
After the move, the wife promised me a whole closet for gear! (Which is good, because right now it's scattered all over the apartment, in my car, on my desk...)

I really am quite surprised--I thought I didn't stand a chance against some of those other finalist pictures. Wow. Thank you, everyone!
Wow. Just... wow. I'll be sure to post pics when she arrives!
