Re: Sword Preference?

Oh, definitely, distance is a factor, but in my experience (and your experience certainly may vary) it hasn't been the most critical. It's a bit hard to illustrate just through text, but by establishing a bind on the spear with the sword through striking or warding, and then maintaining that bind as...

Re: Sword Preference?

The most success I've had was with a hand and half in the half sword, but then you're using the sword like a small spear anyway. I usually try and parry the initial attack, move the pole arm over my head and clear the centerline using my cross for leverage and protection, and either thrusting or at...

Re: Custom Seax

Whoa! I love the fuller in the blade and the overall execution is gorgeous. Definitely heirloom-worthy.

Re: On pipe-weed in Wilderland (long and scholarly warning!)

Udwin - that article was immensely entertaining, it reminded me somewhat of one of Howard's best Conan stories: Beyond the Black River . I'm adding Mr. Martinez's site to my list of bookmarks for further perusal. Also, I agree with Ringulf, thank you for sharing your analytical approach to research,...

Re: On pipe-weed in Wilderland (long and scholarly warning!)

Udwin, incredibly interesting topic - you certainly put a lot of thought into this! One would actually be surprised how long pipe tobacco will keep when stored in an airtight container, 10 years is not an unreasonable amount of time according to experienced smokers, so its very possible for sealed c...

Re: For the Pipe Smokers: Favorite Tobacco?

It's been awhile and a bit late, but Tolkien has been front of mind lately and I couldn't resist popping on and replying to this thread. I've tried the Just For Him middle earth sampler - some really nice blends there. The Longbottom Leaf wasn't to my preference, but certainly not bad. I think my fa...

Re: Opinions on this weapon of the Dwarves

Good eyes - I noticed that too. I really like the design, especially the geometric shaft taper. Maybe in Smaug's horde we'll get a glance at one of the visored helmets too. Not to go too off topic, but for the hat, based on the rest of the clothing I get the impression that the designers were heavil...

Say, aren't the Mad Dwarves out in IN? They'd probably be willing to share some tricks of the trade should you make it out their way.

Re: Any and All Fantasy Fiction Book Discussion

I LOVE Bernard Cornwell! I haven't read his Warlord trilogy, but I have read a lot of his other books. I highly recommend his "Saxon Stories" series. It's about the Danish invasion of Britain under the rule of Alfred the Great. There are 5 out right now, and a 6th one is coming out later ...

Re: Any and All Fantasy Fiction Book Discussion

Cornwell is very formulaic, but I enjoy his books for what they are. In my opinion, his Arthur books are his best work. Highly recommend them.

Re: Any and All Fantasy Fiction Book Discussion

Arthur fans may or may not like Bernard Cornwell's The Warlord Chronicles trilogy, but I really enjoyed them. Cornwell explores a historically plausible Arthur and the trials of native Britons during the Saxon invasion. It turns the legend on its head, but presents what is probably the most "re...

Albion 1st gen spatha blade & bronze sword fittings

I picked up these pieces with the intent of building my own sword, but as I'm getting ready to move I have to whiddle down some of my "project inventory." The blade was picked up from an Albion moat sale, first gen spatha. The edges have a secondary bevel and the blade is not heat-treated....

Snagged the pics from here: http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/Hum ... Ranger.htm

Some good views of the cross and pommel, might be a good reference for the project.

Re: Faramir's Sword (New Line/WETA)

Here we go, these pics are a bit better. Slightly hollow-ground on either side of the fuller?

Re: Faramir's Sword (New Line/WETA)

Whoa, that lighting is rough. It almost looks like a triple fuller at first, but then the tip would have to be almost completely hollow ground. Based on the following pictures, though, my guess is that its actually just a single fuller sword. Something akin to an Oakeshott XVII. A super high polish ...
