Re: On Bracers and Vambraces

Sorry to bring up am old topic, but I'm slowly reading through all the stuff here. I just wanted to add, on the subject of bracers, Chaucers, knights tales yeoman, is described at wearing a green coat, with a hood, and a bracers on his arm. He carried a sword, dagger and bow, and was called a fores...

Re: Hello

Although there are some basic kit items I am looking to acquire/make as I am able: Boots, Waterskin/Waterbottle, Snapsack, Cloak, and Hood. I don't really want to venture too far beyond that until I get my persona fleshed out. As another member living in the hot and humid southeastern US (or Mid-At...

Re: Good first kit items?

I took a stab at putting together a "first 10 bits of kit" list a while back - you can find it here , if you're interested! There's no one-size-fits-all answer, though, so YMMV! A big part of how you put your kit together will depend on what you want to do in your kit (and where you want t...

Re: Numenorean Crossbows!

I haven't picked up a copy of NoMe yet, so I don't know the full context for the part that you're quoting, but I don't know if that quote alone entirely supports that conclusion. It seems that the quote differentiates between crossbows (or "cross-bows") and bows, so I'd expect the "bo...

Re: On period waterproofing

I'm thinking about some of the linen scraps I've used to apply wax/neatsfoot oil to leather, and while I don't know if I'd call them pleasant I wonder if "dubbined" fabric was ever used in any amount. Or failing that, some other grease-based finish. It seems squick, but I could imagine *s...

That looks incredible! Both the pouch itself, and how well it fits with the rest of your gear!

Re: Coffee Thoughts

If memory serves, one of the dwarves in the Hobbit asked for coffee Good memory! Some called for ale, and some for porter, and one for coffee, and all of them for cakes; so the hobbit was kept very busy for a while. A big jug of coffee had just been set in the hearth, the seed-cakes were gone, and ...

Re: Grey wool cloak

That looks great! I really like the leather pieces at the clasp - I assume they are there are reinforcement, but they also add a little visual interest. The front-pieces-crossed-and-pinned-back style of wear always looks very cool with this style of cloak! It's there because I initially cut the neck...

Re: Dakota Firehole Experiment Results

That's very neat, and I'm very impressed that you picked a below-freezing night for your first overnighter in full kit! I saw a video a while back about a similar trick, apparently used by Simon Kenton in the late 18th century. According to "Simon Kenton: His Life and Period: 1755-1836" by...

Re: Hooded Ranger Cloak?

Edit - Iodo's edit beat me to it! I don't use a hooded cloak myself, so take this positively briny, but I know some folks have played with a crossover front in the style of Frodo's original cloak in PJ's movies. Uthgard's cloak has a crossover front, and I think Manveruon has been playing ...

Re: Dúnedain Hats?

In all the patterns I see online the formula goes - your head size divided by 6 + 1/2 inch. The half inch I am assuming is allowance for the seams but is it an additional half inch per piece or headsize + 1/2? It should be "piece = (head size/6) + 1/2 inch", I think. You need the half inc...

Welcome! I re-discovered middle earth rangers recently as I was looking at articles for the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game, and came across a ranger's handbook PDF. I like camping, bushcraft, and historical reenactment and I have loved Middle-Earth ever since I read the Lord of the Rings, so find...

Re: Dúnedain Hats?

I made a 6-panel hat this summer (because summer is when you make wool hats, right?), and I used a reasonably thin wool because that's what I had, but it doesn't get terribly cold where I ramble, I lined it with linen, and I plan to wear it with a hood that I can pull up for extra warmth if I need t...

Re: MERF Random Adventure Pictures

Personally I think rocks work, and I would give a screen like this a trial but only if I could daub the gaps with mud or clay. A lattice would simply leak heat. I absolutely believe that rocks would help, but I haven't personally tried them yet. Provided that they aren't porous and wet, rocks be po...
