Re: Penobscot bow build

OK so the good and the bad. Good news, don't worry it didn't break. Bad news, I made some dumb mistakes being too excited to get this finished and didn't wake up enough and pay attention enough to catch these dumb mistakes. So the bow is not as cool as I would have liked, and I will eventually be ma...

Re: Penobscot bow build

The untwisting was minimal so it went fairly quick. Set up and waiting for it to cool down took longer than the actual untwisting. It didn't show up in the pictures but I used cooking oil to protect the wood from the heat gun. You can see the bottle of Crisco oil in the background of some of the oth...

Re: Penobscot bow build

So my brother had loaned out his heat gun, and I just got it tonight. So will likely be attempting the twist correction over the weekend. Not a whole lot to note or take pictures of the past couple days due to this. A lot of sanding of the limbs starting with 100 grit, then 220, then 400. Since I co...

Re: Penobscot bow build

Got a little bit more done on the bow. Glued up the last lamination, the 3 piece part that goes between the helper and main bow. http://s25.postimg.org/ndkr5wvm7/last_lamination_glue_up.jpg Sanded down the ends of the laminations that had finished being glued, so they are ready to meet up with the b...

Re: Penobscot bow build

OK rather than giving the step by step process I did previously, I am just giving highlights this time. Anyone new to this thread can review the previous info to learn how I tillered the bow First, I had glued up the wood pieces early and found they had horrible gaps due to the Zebrawood having a tw...

Re: Penobscot bow build

That is a huge bummer! Good to see you are bound and determined to see this through though! Hope to see it completed and working well soon, best of luck! Thanks. I will be continuing the build soon. I plan to get the wood laminations ahead of time and glue them up while I am waiting for the kit to ...

Re: 2015 Official MERF Photo Contest

Well due to my bow build going SNAP and ordering a new bow kit, I don't think I will be able to spend the $175 on the fire thing I was planning for this contest. Since it doesn't look like I will be getting this item anytime soon, I figured I will share it. I was hoping to be able to do a review on ...

Peter Remling wrote:That is a shame, I was following the build. Your progress and photos were very informative. I thank you for sharing all of this and hopefully we'll see it's completion after you get the new kit.

Yep already ordered another kit from Crow's Head. This little glitch in the plan wont stop me.

Did a bit more work today. Re: bow oiling

Well if your bow was decently sealed and finished then you shouldn't have too much issue. However since this is a new bow your right to wonder if too much humidity could effect the bow. Both too humid and too dry is bad for a bow. My best suggestion would be to get a dehumidifier and place the bow i...

Re: Penobscot bow build

I decided to go ahead and tiller the bow down to 50# at 28" so did that now, before I went any further. Didn't take much and the bow feels quite good. I forgot to take pictures of this, but I imagine you all can figure out what it looked like since it is pretty much the same thing as the tiller...
