Is that a birch?
I know porcupines can be an issue in the sugar-bush because when the maple sap runs they go straight for it flowing in the cambium (this is why, along with several other reasons, they are traditionally hunted at that time), and I wonder if that would also be the case for birches.

Re: A Week in Scotland
For overly recycled wool, it may be worth re-lanolizing it and seeing if that helps, the stuff is fairly ubiquitous (I've had good luck in the maternity section of large stores) As to unorthodox methods of taking photos, iirc one of less Stroud's favourite camera mounts was a camera with a beanbag s...

Re: First forged blade
Yes! It's modelled after the Såmi and Finnish etc. leather and antler handled, though I haven't seen any of those made with bark-on moose antler spikes (usually reindeer shaft sections)

First forged blade
Just finished up the sheath on the first knife I've forged (couple weeks ago now) Moose antler andle and sheath lower, leather oak-tanned cowhide upper, and home-tanned deerskin loop. Not intentionally middle-earth, but fits it well I think. https://i.postimg.cc/sggq7gtz/IMG-20220605-131505-025.webp...

What's the title of the position I'm thinking of getting a bachelor's in biodiversity and earth science and that seems like the kind of thing I'd want to do

Re: 17th C Highland Expedition Equipment
I am so waiting for a video on that pack he made. It hangs in an interesting fashion, but I don't recall seeing shots in good enough light to see exactly how he made it. For a bit I was even wondering if he just used the legs for the upper part of the straps. Also I'm just enthralled by those bog-t...

Re: Why so rough?
I think this the negative side of this plays a a part as well... It's not just that they want the dwarves to look like craftsmen, it's that pre-modern elite aesthetics come across as... Tacky, to the modern eye. Gaudy and overdone. I cannot count how many times I have seen Carolingian metalwork (and...

Re: Why so rough?
I think a significant part of this that only applies beyond dwarves - but is perhaps seen most starkly in them, due to being craftsmen - is a difference between pre- and post- modern aesthetics. In premodern societies - speaking very generally, of course, but I think this applies at least to the per...

Re: Vanity Fair Article on RoP
Tbh I think it depends on how the compression is done - I can see mortality still being a strong theme even if it's over say, a few hundred years and a half dozen or dozen generations of men in that time vs the what, thousands of years of the second age in the books? I think in a visual medium that ...

Re: Thoughts on folding spoons?
I think one way the bulk-saving properties of the folding spoon were achieved — but without the additional mechanical complexity — was with spoons with very short, flat handles, that are held between the thumb and side of the forefinger. These are common among the nomads of the Eurasian Boreal and ...
