Re: Keeping Watch

I’ve pulled security plenty of times while out on patrols. It’s especially fun when there was zero threat(training scenarios). Often wondering what hell am I doing awake looking into empty darkness. Fun times. But training mirrors actual missions. I think it’s just another aspect of being out on a R...

Wow

I read all the newsletters yesterday. That was my second time through. It is simply amazing how much work Greg and the others at MERS put into creating their parameters for the accurate re-creation of Middle-earth. The research, organization and the passing of knowledge, all top notch. My efforts pa...

Re: What's everyone working on?

I’m finally finishing up a batch arrows. Fourteen for Rangering and 5 for 3D courses. Those five will have bright yellow fletching as I tend to take some risky shots on 3D courses and need arrows a bit easier to find when they zing past the target. I use Douglas Fir shafts spined for my bows draw we...

Re: Hard drinks in Middle Earth

Good catch on the moonshine reference! I had entirely forgotten about that throw-away line! Had to go look it up to remind myself! Of course, one could perhaps interpret that as a sort of fanciful interpretation by the translator (like a good many things in the Hobbit, for example), but if anyone i...

Re: Hard drinks in Middle Earth

Well, I’m going with the fact that Ted Sandyman mentions moonshine. And Rangers need their occasional brown liquor.

Re: Ranger pack

I dug out some old pics of my basic pack from a defunct computer. Downloaded to a thumb drive, uploaded to the current computer, and found out the files were too large. Bumped them over to imgur and hopefully they will come out: 1st pick is the pack itself. It's an old military pack I painted a bro...

I'm curious about your boots (they look fantastic) Are they a mod? It looks like a modern sole. Hey Tom, I made these boots some time ago, early in my Rangering days. The soles are modern, although based on what I'm seeing with the natural soles on some boots, mine have far less traction. These wer...

Re: Ranger pack

Andy, What are the two arrows outside the quiver for? Are they field points and hunting heads stay in the quiver? Hey Peter, the arrows in the quiver are field tips or bodkins. The arrows on the outside are broad head hunting tips. The shearling inside the quiver is great for keeping the arrows sti...

Ranger pack

With the addition of the side straps,I think my pack is right where I want it.
The straps act as compression straps when the ruck’s not full. Super happy that Tolkien wrote packs into Middle-earth.

New belt knife

Smaller sax style knife. The blades right at 7 1/2”. Came with a decent edge. I like the size for general camp work and it fitting on my belt at the small of the back. I’ll try it on my strong side next time out, but I’m liking it on the back. I did some hard batoning with it and it’s a bit of a bea...

Quick trek

Outing My fiancé and I had a few awesome days of modern camping at Farish Rec. Area on Rampart Range. I also got in a bit of Ranger trekking. The plan was to move for a few hours up into the national forest, find a location to set up a camp site, then scout the area. Seeing weather approaching soone...
