Re: Middle-Earth Tool Roll

Very cool! Seems like it should solve your problem, and it's very cleanly executed, to boot! Unfortunately, I don't have a solid historical precedent for this, much less a solid Middle Earth tie-in, but I'm hoping something shows up. I have a tertiary source that places tool rolls (conceptually sim...

Re: Middle-Earth Tool Roll

This isn't only for eating tools...there will be scant more than a spoon in here in that regard. I don't ever sleep on wet ground...and this is not for sleeping on. This has nothing to do with bedding. I don't ever cook meat on a stick anymore, and don't really know why that's applicable. With all ...

Re: Middle-Earth Tool Roll

I have to say that I have never had this problem in what must be something like 50 odd years of camping out with primitive gear. The only eating tools I carry & need are a knife & a wooden spoon. The spoon resides in my knapsack. First thing I do in wet weather is set up my oilcloth shelter,...

Re: Safety In Historical Trekking. Armed & Prepared.

Thank you, Le Loup! On one hand, I hesitate to learn survival from anyone who hasn't gone through more survival disasters than I have personally. These are the experiences that we learn from, if we live to tell the tale. On the other hand, I'd like to remind any and all that merely having a sword (...

If anyone is interested in purchasing suitable spectacles/eye glasses, Trevor Timms in the UK makes good eye wear. I wrote a short article on my blog here: http://woodsrunnersdiary.blogspot.com.a ... asses.html

Re: Tinder fungus

Charring plant tinder material in the fire is easy. You do NOT just place it in the fire, you use a pointy stick the same way as you would to cook meat on a stick.

Re: Tinder fungus

Interesting. I have a large-ish tinderbox which is fairly watertight and a smaller tin with a perforated lid I keep inside for charring. I get the fact that you can char materials and then extinguish them in your tinderbox, eliminating weight and complexity, but it seems like it would be less effic...

Re: Waterproofing Leather?

I am quickly coming to completion on several essential pieces of my kit, but I need to find a good way to waterproof small leather bags for a couple of them, so I wanted to ask: what are your favorite methods of watherproofing leather? I've heard some people recommend mink oil, but I wanted to hear...
