Re: Native Walking
It is often amazing to some of us how little some people know. We that live this life tend to forget that the habits & knowledge we have is not gained without experience. To be a part of nature you first have to understand that you are an animal, no different from any other animal. Some animals ...

Re: Tinder fungus
No need to use a tin as an oven to char tinder SierraStrider. Tinder was & still is charred directly in the fire & then extinguished in the tinderbox. Regards, Keith. Keith's right. To add to it, if you want to char cloth at home to have available, you'll need to poke a hole in your tin to ...

Re: Tinder fungus
Good to know that we have something viable out here in CA. I seem to remember seeing turkey tails in my field guide to the Sierra as well, so that might be an option. I've certainly seen a fair few toadstools of various species around, so maybe tossing those in the char tin would work. I've tried c...

Re: WINTER MOUNTAIN OVERNIGHT KIT HELP
I totally agree with Kortoso , trekking is not all about the equipment you carry, experience & skills play a big part especially if it ever comes to a survival situation. Remember, when packing for the trail, there must be a compromise between two principles; minimum weight & maximum self-re...

Re: WINTER MOUNTAIN OVERNIGHT KIT HELP
From what I have observed over the years, batoning is something that was invented by the bushcraft enthusiasts in an attempt to add another bushcraft skill. I find the practice pointless & impracticable. If a person does not know how to acquire dry kindling without batoning a knife, then they c...

Re: WINTER MOUNTAIN OVERNIGHT KIT HELP
Personally I have never ever had to cut wood for a fire when in the woods, never. I carry three knives & a trade axe. My hunting knife is for skinning & butchering game & for defence. My legging knife is a back-up for my hunting knife to save me time if I should accidently dull the blade...

Re: WINTER MOUNTAIN OVERNIGHT KIT HELP
Right tool for the job. A trade axe is a good choice, very versatile, but I would NEVER baton a hunting knife to split wood! You look after your tools, & they will look after you.
