Re: Leather Boot & Jerkin Projects

I think they would have worn clothing similar to what Strider was described as wearing when we are first introduced to him in the Prancing Pony Inn, no uniform per se, just forest colors to blend in. I don't think they would have had a uniform look like the Ithilien Rangers, they wouldn't have had t...

Re: Leather Boot & Jerkin Projects

I don't remember any colors of the Grey Company's garb being mentioned other than their dark grey cloaks. Did Tolkien write that they wore only black and grey? "A little apart the Rangers sat, silent, in an ordered company, armed with spear and bow and sword. They were clad in cloaks of dark g...

Re: Dunedain Star Brooch...

For myself, I would probably use this just as a brooch pinned on the cloak. None of my current cloak/capes close to the side and having even rounded points near my throat could be problematic! O_o We have the basic star that most seem to like, I guess it is a matter of consulting with a jewelery cra...

Re: Dunedain Star Brooch...

Pewter would not be that expensive, and could still be kept polished, it would not be bright as silver. it could also be lacquered to help keep its initial shine.

The star as it is now is about 3" top to bottom, that could be reduced to 1/2 that size and still have a nice brooch.

Re: Dunedain Star Brooch...

Still somehow leaning toward a single star design. . . .in silver. . .I'm reminded of the line in the book. "There was no gleam of stone or gold, nor any fair thing in all their gear and harness; nor did their riders bear any badge or token, save only that each cloak was pinned upon the left sh...

Re: Dunedain Star Brooch...

Good "points" Eledhwen! The other option would be to make this as a dished-out disk with the star etched into it, similar to the style of the forum logo. Or. . . A flat disk with a 2-D star attached to it, then the pin-back would have plenty to attach to. Then the issue of snags woul...

Re: Dunedain Star Brooch...

My wife works with clay, maybe I can talk her into doing a version we can make a mold from.

Size-wise, how big should we make this?

Re: Dunedain Star Brooch...

I guess the next thing to do is have the Rangers that know the SCA jewellers take a look at it at and come up with a prototype design that can be cast in pewter.

Re: Dunedain Star Brooch...

Slightly longer top and bottom rays. . .

The gray is just to give it depth,
