Re: Anyone making anything fun lately?

I just finished up my version 1 cloak and hood - slightly modified bocksten cloak and slightly modified skjoldehamn hood. It runs about knee length ( I was intending to make it mid calf, but oh well) and seems to work pretty well as far as rain and cold weather go. I'm thinking about adding some tie...

Re: Torches and light sources

From a practical standpoint - I think candle lanterns have a value in areas that are prone to burn bans and the like. I would suspect that torches would be frowned upon in those conditions. Any thoughts on oil or kerosene lanterns like the style below? https://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2432365/stans...

Re: Torches and light sources

I wonder though - when talking about carry weight as your inspiration for this post, were you perhaps inspired by this article? I thought it was pretty great, overall, and I had to chuckle at the guy making a bunch of torches out of paint stirring sticks  https://www.outsideonline.com/culture/...

Re: Middle-Earth Tool Roll

Sewing suede is easier with a Glover's needle (otherwise known as a Bayonet needle), it has a short triangular section at the pointed end that cuts its way through the leather (try really hard not to stab yourself, I think they're worse then a regular point.... And they bleed like b-gg--s ). I have...

Torches and light sources

I ran across some dnd weight comparisons today, and that got me thinking: what would rangers use for light sources at night, and how would they carry them? I have made some crude torches before, but they all involved some form of oil soaked cloth around a good branch, and I imagine those would be me...

Re: Keeping Watch

Regarding timekeeping, If a group of rangers was regularly keeping watch, would they have trained their internal clocks to wake at the correct times? I know that people can train themselves to wake at a specific time each day, or to sleep for a certain amount of time. Also, for timekeeping for someo...

Re: Middle-Earth Tool Roll

This is brilliant - I am definitely going to be adding something similar to my kit (and my list of things to sew grows). Question: from what I understand this is completely linen, but what would you think about making the outer roll waterproofed suede leather? I happen to have better access to cheap...

Re: A Tale of Two Kits

I definitely have on my list some armor to add to my regular kit for war. I'm thinking mail with boiled leather shin and arm guards and possibly a boiled leather chestplate as well, plus a viking/norman helm and a shield. I figured that it was likely that the rangers would add to normal kit more tha...

Re: Member Map

Well, I'm not sure how to add myself as the info on page two seems to be outdated but I'm located in northeast Texas. Not sure who is the closest to me but there's not many. Regarding forums versus Discord, different strengths for different purposes. I love this forum and find it nice to have a rep...

I am making modified moccasin boots based off of the craft manual of North American Footwear. They are definitely version one boots, but so far it's going well!

Howdy!

Howdy! My name is Nathan. I re-discovered middle earth rangers recently as I was looking at articles for the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game, and came across a ranger's handbook PDF. I like camping, bushcraft, and historical reenactment and I have loved Middle-Earth ever since I read the Lord of t...

Re: On the subject of blankets and shelters

I got several wool blankets for $10 a piece on Craig's list, each around 4lbs and twin sized. In addition, I picked up a 80% grey wool blanket from harbor freight for $12. I took some camping last weekend in 40 degree fahrenheit weather with fairly high winds and was comfortable in street clothes wi...
