My bush knife is a leuku, and true to the Saami way, it has a thong by which its supposed to hang.
I prefer to shove it under my belt, so it doesn't dangle and swing and so I know it's always there (at least the sheath is).

I wrap the flint and steel with a cloth to keep them from rattling about, so the lens is safe from being scratched.

Ursus - awesome! I'm looking forward to hearing your results! Greg - thank you! I'd looked into that option late last year. Sadly that product is fit only for hardsided canteens and bottles. As their rep told me - ... we are sorry to disappoint you; however, our pitch becomes more stiff and brittle...

Re: What are the contents of Aragorn's belt pouch?
I wouldn't assume that in an ancient context, the lens was glass; natural quartz was indeed used, and we might satisfy ourselves (usually) with common glass cast or ground to shape. The Hudson's Bay Company fire kit (copied from an original antique) apparently originally had a quartz crystal lens, a...

It''s something that is done the Mediterranean area with wheat. They call it bulgur. Is there any evidence that this was used in Northern Europe?Greg wrote:Any types you'd recommend trying it out on? Might work on green lentils or kidney beans.

It may or may not be appropriate to your interpretation of your Ranger persona, or any medieval woodsman, but this messer has been acclaimed by many who know their blades: http://www.coldsteel.com/maa-messer.html https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT5qGufFAhT1gQWQ_UMVDdy2wQn0ZYg8Dv...

Re: Rider of Rohan (or Foot Soldier of Rohan)
Kudos! Full marks on acquiring a horse, there, lad! Good on you. The coif, or biggins, worn as a regular hat rather than something under a helmet, is something from a later period than Anglo-Saxon/Viking era, from what I recall. I know this is a fantasy world, but the Rohan are based on early Anglo-...

Re: Amazon Series
Brethren, I do indeed remember many decades ago the grouchy talk surrounding announcements that someone named Peter Jackson was filming the legend.
That didn't turn out too badly did it now?
Anyway, here is more news and speculation:

One thing that slows a lot of would-be smiths, is the assumption that the anvil needs to be a huge block of iron or steel.
The Vikings often made do with something little more than a iron spike driven into a heavy stump.

Nope. My friends in Regia Anglorum, think that fabric made from nettle fiber was commonly used.

Young Ranger
This young fellow (I know not his age, nor real name) had taken upon himself the banner of the Middle-Earth Ranger.

It appears that Amazon's vaunted LOTR series will (at least at first) focus on a young Aragorn. I foresee a new crop of Rangering fans.

Re: Faramir's Nail-Knife: Essential Kit or Ithilen field mod?
What comes to mind for me (mostly due to the usage rather than the name) is a small "patch-knife" as used by mountain men.
