Re: Matches
Awesome stuff :P as for striking surfaces, if you can get hold of swan matches that aren't safety ones, they will strike on sand-paper, and some sand-papers can look quite rustic, maybe you can use that ? No such luck for me unfortunately. While I don't think they're outright banned in New Zealand,...

Oh and if anyone wants to use the design go for it

So! One of the things that I feel has been stopping me from getting out and about in my kit has been my abysmal lack of skill at getting a fire started using historical methods. This is something I want to remedy over the coming year but it’s going to take a lot of practice. In the meantime I wanted...

Re: belt pouch
Thanks for the great feedback guys! It's the stitched-on top flap that gets my attention. :) I think I started doing things that way after looking at too many 14th c. girdle purses and 18th c. shot pouches. I don't know how "in period" it is for Eriador to stitch on the top flap rather tha...

belt pouch
A little belt pouch i made recently. Pretty simple enough, the general shape was inspired by Elleth and Manveruon's designs. The contents are by no means set in stone but at the moment consists of a little fire kit. 24A74E89-F101-47FA-A5D9-1FA4939B4171.jpg D42B30D1-E581-4096-910E-D7F46374E0AB.jpg 04...

Re: Waxing linen
Thanks again for the advice everyone! Sorrel that bag is stellar, I love the style of it. A quick update to this project! One of my favourite local fabric stores recently closed down which is pretty sad but on the upside they had a massive clearance sale. To cut a long story short I managed to find ...

Re: Yuletide Traditions?
In terms of the elves, there is specific reference to 'the festival of Nost-na-Lothion or the Birth of Flowers' in the fall of Gondolin. While of course this is in the first age, it's not hard to imagine this tradition enduring, and perhaps a similar ceremony being practiced by those who have had cl...

Re: Waxing linen
I've never experienced anything like that with waxed stuff, but it will be flammable and it won't breathe- so it might get funky inside if you don't keep it cleaned and dried out. Everything's a tradeoff. Personally I'm quite happy with an untreated linen snapsack: unless it's really pouring, it'll...

- they have earthern forges and ovens they build as needed/at various camps Personally I could quite easily imagine a roaming Dunedain campsite forge resembling something along the lines of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5r2rOjI8rw (This whole channel is a goldmine if you haven't encountere...

Waxing linen
So I recently finished work on a nice simple linen snapsack as my old chrome tanned leather one was a bit too narrow for my cook-pot. My question is what do you guys think would be the best way to add some waterproofing to it using authentic methods? My plan at the moment is just to give it a heavy ...

Re: Kit update
Thanks for the feedback guys! How well do you find the viking leg wraps function on the trail? While i have yet to get a chance to use them in a legitimate trekking context I've found that they stay up remarkably well. The key is making sure that they are long enough to wrap around the top of the ca...

Kit update
So it's been pretty much a year since i last posted anything on here what with all the uh, *gestures wildly at everything* stuff going on. Thankfully though the chaos I've been able to continue to make reasonably steady progress on my kit so i figured it was about time to post an update. low2.png lo...

The peen hammer worked a treat, it's amazing how much more responsive the blade feels now!
