Re: Made a poplar scabbard core

I can't tell very well from those pictures but it looks to me like the wood is still fairly thick and blocky. The main part of the process of making scabbard liners is the thinness to shave it down to. On the ones I've made, I've brought the wood down to less than 1/8" and this was still chunki...

Re: New Water Bottle

Looks really nice! How's the cord doing on your shoulder with the weight? I've commissioned a ceramic bottle of that style among other things and I wove a broader strap so it doesn't press so badly and that'll be on top of the scarf I keep around my neck.

Re: Larger tarp shelters

When I have erected a shelter in that configuration before, it has been maybe smaller than yours since I ended up shoving my things to the back corner of the shelter and curling up by the door and pole. I placed my shield in the front to cover the gap and I stayed dry through some pretty good rain o...

Re: Latex Weapons

Just a question that is on topic to this off topic topic. Have you ever made custom weapon heads for heavy fighting a-la the cast rubber of those potato rollers or kong maces? I don't remember if I posted it on here or not, but I found someone selling an early period mace head fragment and later fou...

Re: Larger tarp shelters

My main idea about larger tents is that if it is housing multiple individuals is that one carries the tarp and others food and other gear, then the poles are their polearms. This is just supposition, I haven't seen depictions of tents other than late period pavilions. Here are some configurations I'...

Re: A Little Help

Go with a drill press and a file. Depending on the particular mix in your copper alloy, then you may be able to repeatedly hammer the lower guard over the tang and flatten it out until the shape is properly made.

Re: Questions about materials...

The thing about using leather for bags is that it is heavy and stretches over time. This has to do with what leather is, skin. To preform the task it is grown for, it has to be stretchy and thick. Linen on the other hand is made from the stalk of the flax plant. It is grown for strength and rigidity...

Re: Questions about materials...

Natural methods of waterproofing fabric are going to work best on natural fabrics. One way to determine this is by burning a small piece. Here is a chart of the attributes of various fabric when burned http://www.ditzyprints.com/dpburnchart.html My favorite method of waterproofing fabric is to use m...

Re: what would work for a saxe?

There are lots of things people call saxes that are used for lots of different tasks, but the big ones comparable to a machete seem to be principally weapons so I'm guessing that's your purpose. On a historical basis, the usage of scales to construct the handle comes around in the 14th century, well...

Re: New knife

Oh, I misunderstood the explanation of the construction. I thought you meant there was only one insert that the knife is held against with leather on its opposite face.

Re: New knife

I have made some sheaths with the water forming method before, but since the leather holds moisture right against the steel it made the blade rust (not much of a problem with a stainless blade of course). Treating the sheath with oil did the trick, but recently I have treated most of my leather item...

Re: Dunedain Lembas Bread Experiment

The bread looks like it turned out good to me, my main concern with them would be the shelf life. The bread I have been carrying for a few years is made with barely any salt or sugar as these hold moisture, and baked with a thick and hard crust. Adding many sweet and soft ingredients like I see list...

Re: Spring 2013 Indy Moot - RECAP

I had a great time at the meet as always. Most everything worked as it should with just a few things to improve in the future. Thanks to Straelbora for making the trip, it was nice to have new faces around camp.

Cutting the end short makes me want to start earlier, are you doing something earlier that would prevent us from having tuesday lunch on site?
