Any plans?

Post by Eric C »

Okay, okay. I know many people aren't moving around yet with the Covid-19 thing still going on. But bear with me. I'm dying to hit the woods but that's not a good idea right now. My daughter, Ruinferil, took an Orc blade to the side last Wednesday (Okay, she had her appendix removed), so no camping for us at the moment.

However! Sept 22 is this coming Tuesday. I understand this is the date that Bilbo went on his unexpected adventure. Since that is a work day/night, we are planning a few simple things for this weekend. Last weekend we sat down and started watching the trilogy with Ruinferil's boyfriend. Tonight we will have party foods for supper and watch ROTK. He is interested in reading the books. We will have him kitted out and named in no time. Tomorrow, we will be in the back yard, hopefully in kit, around a fire. Our meal will be cooked over said fire. I'm hoping to get an axe target put together in the morning so we can try our hands at tomahawk throwing again. Also, we will break out the archery gear and play with it. I'm hoping for a good time to break up all of the rough times we have all had this year.

Yes, I know, pics or it didn't happen. I may also upload a small video to my YouTube channel about one item I have neglected to talk about and link it here on the forums.

So, what say you? Have you any plans to celebrate this occasion? If so, let us see those pics!

I’ve been really wanting to get out there myself, but my kit has been in a state of advanced disrepair, so I’ve kind of been spending the summer just getting it back to trail-worthy. It’s finally ready to go, at least for the most part, and I DESPERATELY want to go somewhere where I can get some great pictures with the leaves changing here in the mountains, but I’m having a hard time scheduling it.
I don’t feel overly concerned about hiking with a few select other people really. I’ve been going on some mundane hikes with friends this summer, and we always wear masks and try to keep plenty of distance, so I’m pretty confident I can translate that into Ranger hikes (particularly since masks are already an integral part of an Ithilien Ranger’s kit at the very least).

I can honestly say that I didn't know that was the date, I went on a kit hike last weekend but what better excuse to do something fun - as I have no plans :P

I hope you have a great time

We have a cold front pushing through that is generating some wind. This could threaten our plans for a fire. I will see how bad the winds are and make a judgement call from there. With everything on the west coast already burning, I certainly don't want to be the one who starts it up in the east. But even without the fire, we can still have fun.

My sons just finished their soccer games, so we're headed out to the Dragons Wood Inn for tonight and tomorrow. We've had some great fall weather (clear, dry, and cool) and will definitely have a fire tonight. Likely go for a hike tomorrow, with at least cloaks if not in more gear.

Just got back from visiting 6 national parks. It was my wife, daughter and me so we weren't in kit, but it was definitely good to get outside.

Sounds like a lot of fun. It's great to get the family involved. My whole family has enjoyed sitting by the fire, eating and just being together. Great memory makers.

Elyon cooked a recipe of pork chops over the fire. We had potatoes roasted in the fire with zucchini and squash. It was one of the best meals we've had all year.

This weekend would have been our biggest living history event of the year but like everything else it got cancelled this time.
So next weekend Heimir are meeting up to spend a day crafting followed by some particularly large steaks cooked over coals and washed down with bright helpings of mead. Hopefully he will be so full afterwards he wont object to my lyre playing and heroic poetry.
By happy coincidence I now find it coincides closely to Bilbo's departure and that we are planning a similar night to the one that he, Gandalf and the Dwarves enjoyed.

This is something we always worry about here in Australia too. When I see all the coverage of your fires it really hits home that ours were only 9 months ago but in the COVID world they seem forgotten, You've got the right mindset there.
But the white fury of the Northmen burned the hotter, and more skilled was their knighthood with long spears and bitter. Fewer were they but they clove through the Southrons like a fire-bolt in a forest.

Sadly, I wasn't able to get out today due to combination of factors but I wish I could have done at least a short hike. Glad to hear that some of you got out in the wild! Happy Hobbit Day!
