I suspected someone of your experience would have had something going but couldn't see signs.

Personally I think rocks work, and I would give a screen like this a trial but only if I could daub the gaps with mud or clay.
A lattice would simply leak heat.
For seven days without eating or sleeping the new king sat, until he stood and cried "This cannot be borne!"!

I absolutely believe that rocks would help, but I haven't personally tried them yet. Provided that they aren't porous and wet, rocks be positioned closer to the fire than a wooden screen and have much more mass, which should allow them to absorb and then radiate heat.

I've been running 5Ks every other night with varying levels of gear. Tonight, all of it.

yep, allowed to go shopping although all non-essential shops are closed, and were allowed to drive somewhere for exercise once a day, providing we don't drive for longer than half an hour, that cuts out all my favourite adventure places :(
