Where is everyone buying their clothing from or if you are making it, what patterns and where from?

I can make all of mine own kit except for the clothing....

I buy some and make some. It all depands on price, quality and time involved. Drawstring pants are very easy to make but are also readily available online through any number of sites and Ebay.

I have a wool coat from Halfmoon Outfitters and I've also made a leather coat, leather jerkin and many cloth tunics and a few cloaks.

I'll try to come up with a list of suppliers and post it here in the next few days.

Another consideration is how "period" you want to go. Cotton wasn't mentioned, linen and wool were (based on Tolkien's writtings) but linen and wool can be dramatically more costly.

As far as patterns go, I've used McCalls or another major brand. I've always adjusted their patterns to fit my specific idea for what I ws making.
The leather coat I recently completed is a typical duster pattern, that I left off the sleeves, increased the bib length, added an addtitional piece to the bib so it would go completely around and double over itself, added buttons where there were none originally and made it larger than the largest size to accomodate my wool coat or armor underneath.

For a jerkin I did several years ago I used a shirt pattern,. I altered the sleeves, neck and length. After I was finished I added fur to the collars and sleeves to give it a more rustic look.

Making it is always going to be more fun. I use Tolkien's descriptions to keep me honest, but customizing my clothing is just as important as the actual pieces of gear. Design them all to work together, and you'll have an efficient equipment set that's a joy to use.
