Budget Authenticity: Caedmon's Stitch of the Week

Post by caedmon »

Sewing knowledge can be gained. I have a lot of experience hand and machine sewing. In this post I'll be adding a historical hand sewing stitch each week. Please add comments to this post's sister thread: 'Comments/Discusion on Caedmon's Stitch of the Week'

A stronger stitch: the Back Stitch

The back stitch is your workhorse stitch, It's strong and does it's job. Marc Carlson's wife did a count of extant medieval clothing and found that about 75% used this as the main stitch. (I need to confirm this)

This is a necessary step if you want your kit to last. (Or even survive the wash)

Hem Stitch:

There are two basic variants on the hem stitch, depending on if you are using material that is or is not prone fraying. (rule of thumb: everything but fulled/felted wool is prone to fray)
