yeah,
i think we are a guilty at some point of trying to pack every thing but the "kitchen sink" my self included. the 30# lb pack idea sounds good. pairing it all down to the bare essentials.

Re: Of Viking weaponry
Well, for the 70# pack, we were also packing in 3 gallons of water each for cleaning, cooking, drinking, becuase there were no real creeks where we went. If we drop the water, that's 26# right there.
Basically I need to replace items with skillsets. No backup lighters or fire starters (lint, parafin, and bacon greese in egg crates) because I would become an expert fire starter with a striker. Scratch the tent and just bring an oil cloth and some rope. Stuff like that. I think i can get down to 30#, or 40# with weapons.

Re: Of Viking weaponry
I like the idea of the Viking/Dane equipment, but then again, I've been adding a Rohirrim flavor to my Ranger-ness, so that's right up my alley. When I get the cash flow, I'd like to build my kit with something like this:
-Godfred Viking longsword
-Hungarian horse bow
-Saxon Scramasax
-Bearded or Mammen axe
-Utility/Eating knife
Good? Bad? I'd like your feedback.

Good choices David.
While the Mammen is very nice looking it's farily small. See if you can handle one before buying. If that fails sketch the axes dimensions on a piece of paper.
I wanted one of the for a long time until I took a good look at it's size.

Thanks! I was favoring the bearded axe anyway. I might purchase a Mammen axe one of these days, but just for a "wall-hanger".Peter Remling wrote:While the Mammen is very nice looking it's farily small. See if you can handle one before buying.
