Candle Lantern
I started to post this right away, but decided instead to take the time to get caught up on my forum reading first. Wouldn’t you know it, the Edge of the Wild newsletter for the summer had a review of the very candle lantern that I based mine off of! Guess I wasn’t too far off base with thinking that the level of technology was M.E. appropriate! Mine isn’t quite so nice, being a repurposed Altoids tin, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out!

That looks great, Brian!
Do you have any other photos of how it's constructed? I can afford to buy a commercially produced version, but I'm a stickler for hand-making my own kit stuff, if at all possible...I'd like to try my hand at making one.

I used to have one of these, they ar epretty handy. There is another historical one, and I can't seem to find the vendor that had it, but it had a third piece that had a mica sheet that acted as a pane/wind shield.
Edit, found it.

Re: Candle Lantern
Cool project! It doesn’t seem like the YouTube link is working so I’ll just ask if the Altoids tin is one of the larger varieties? Or is rather compact in the small tins?

Here is another one in brass wtih mica window panes:

I think it is based on Kephart's lantern.

It’s a 3 3/4†by 2 3/8†tin, and I used 1/2†copper pipe for the candle holder.Cimrandir wrote:Cool project! It doesn’t seem like the YouTube link is working so I’ll just ask if the Altoids tin is one of the larger varieties? Or is rather compact in the small tins?

Re: Candle Lantern
yeah, youtube links don't work for me on this forum either, I think it's something to do with what browser you have, here's the trick I use to see them:Cimrandir wrote:Cool project! you click the "quote" button on the post with the link, then you can see the script of the link in the forum text editor (I've removed the brackets on the ends so it shows) that looks like:
youtube]OwnHwqygEzk[/youtube
once you've got that, you go on any other youtube video and switch the video code in the url (the bit after watch?v=) for the one in the link, in this case: OwnHwqygEzk, giving you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwnHwqygEzk
