Made a soup spoon

Post by Rockfarm »

Very rainy in Costa Rica today and to top it off I have a stuffy nose "Thank you very much" lol
Since I had a new blade to try out, decided to care a spoon out of eucalyptus. All the carving was done with the knife, then sealed the wood with super glue and sanded. The runes on the handle is Dwarven for SOUP... seemed fitting.

Nice :P that is a very neat spoon to have made without a curved spoon carving knife, very well done

I'm not sure about sealing the wood with glue tho? because it's not a food safe chemical, you might be better off just rubbing it over with a food safe oil after every few uses instead

Nicely done!

(... and I've no idea about wood finishes as such, but I use raw flax oil on our treenware and it works quite nicely - though it does need to be refreshed every so often)

Thank you all very much! I got the idea to use super glue from a wood turners forum, they like to use it to seal the inside of goblets. I enjoy bushcraft quite a bit and the challenge of carving a spoon or cup with my knife is a fun one!

No disrepect to your current tools but if you can turn out a spoon that nice using that knife then you would be a wonder with a few hook knives.

Thank you, it's a prototype blade made by a bladesmith in the UK who happens to be a friend.

Very nice! How is it treated? I oiled mine, but a more durable finish would be nice. Most importantly, does it fit in your mouth? Mine came out like one of those Chinese soup spoons; the Japanese call them renge. Maybe influence from my Time in the east

Lovely. Does eucalyptus wood have a noticeable smell? This is giving me ideas ...
