long sax

A central place to talk about weapons and armour, as it relates to your kit. This is where you show it of or talk about making it. Discussing the relative merits of types of weapons goes in the WMA section.

long sax

Post by dwayne davis »

Hey guys i wanted to share my weekend project with you all. i decided after readin some other post on turning out a seax from a cold stee machete that i would give it a try. the blade was made from a katana machete and is about 16 inches long. I would like to engrave the blade with dwarvish/or viking runes. and carve a desighn into the handle. i wish i had taken more pics as i went. the handle is made from ash and had a pilot hole drilled all the way through then the tang was burned in then glued as well. the collar on the blade was nothing moore than a peice of steel tubing cut and bent to shape. i havnt even thought about a sheath yet. :( i may turn out another one later on maybe :D

Thanks. that 1050 steel is a good choice for this sort of thing. i had enough left to start work on a byknife for a future sword. i gotta think of a name for it then thats what im gonna engrave on the blade. :D

That's a really good looking seax! Nice job! Also, I think I have those same boots you are wearing.

As soon as i come up with a design for the handle, and a name for the blade, nothin complicated mind you just simple. i will post the final pics, already tested it out by cutting up a small fallen tree, it held up fine. soooo it gets a name :D

Hey i got out ye ole ruler. the blade is just a smeagol under 1/8 th inch. mind you some period seax were as thick as 1/4 of an inch thick. but most of those were made by the semi skilled village blacksmith who rarly made a weapon. better made seaxes were thinner.... maybe 3/16th of an inch? :D its a little thin but very strong and suprisingly stiff too. ( theres a joke there somewhere)

I just used a cutting wheel on low speed on an angle grinder for the few cuts needed. trick is to go slow or you risk destroying the temper already in the blade,
(edit) oh and i also kept a spray bottle of water handy to keep the balde wet.
