long sax

A central place to talk about weapons and armour, as it relates to your kit. This is where you show it of or talk about making it. Discussing the relative merits of types of weapons goes in the WMA section.

I like your design quite a bit. Well done!

Very nice work!

I am in the same boat as far as the forge right now but was looking to do a few blade projects. before I even read this post I had ordered three of the cold steel 12" sax machetes and two of the 18" for very much the same project. Your thread was a confirmation that I had the right project in mind!

Did you take down the black powder coating on the blades? it certainly does look nice with a more natural finnish. If so what method did you use?

Lastly did you mention that there was another article on doing this somewhere?

Thanks and again, nice job!

This might be the article you're looking for, it covers two cold steel conversions by different people here.

I have another blade cut to the brokeback style sitting on my workbench. It's several projects in the future though, so I'll probably finish it in Aug.

Hey just noticed youre question. yes i did remove the coating from the steel. i used emery paper to get the job done then a mix of veieger and soap to thicken it. which was applied to the steel and left overnight, to etch it to a aged grey color. wich the residue was removed with a soapy sponge then oiled.

Cool I did get some instruction from the other thread which helped but you said you made a mixture of soap and veieger? is that a typo of vineger or another substance I am not familiar with?

lol yeah im awefull at typing. yes vinigar, or lemon juice. the dish detergent is used to thicken it enough to stick to the blade. its just a reperat process of applying it, letting it sit for a few hours, cleaning it off with a soapy sponge( i use the green and yellow scrubber type from the local dollar store) then repeating it till you get the level of grey you want. :D
