That cloak is and always has been legit.

The sagum varied over time. Best known was a rectangle with a hole cut in the center. Later a circle. The paludamentum was a trapazoidal hoodless cloak. The Gaulish Cloak I mentioned before was a trimmed rectangle with a hood, basically two rectangles, folded over, hood stitched down the top and the bottom corners trimmed. There were a host of others. Almost all of them based on the rectangle.
