So just saw this video, and figured I would post it up here, as an alternative for folks who are not handy but want a period looking fishing kit, or for an inspiration for the DIYers of another way to build one other than those shown in this thread already.
You can find these for sale at the Canteenshop for $39.99 http://www.canteenshop.com/custom-gear.html FYI they are out of stock but expect new stock in Oct.
While I didn't see these offered direct from Deepwoods leather, Deepwoods are well worth the time to check out and have some amazing leather gear, including a sewing kit and bags and pouches etc that would be a great addition to a Ranger's kit. http://deepwoodsleather.com/index.html
The kit contains:

4 Cricket Grillo #8;
2 #214-8;
4 Aberdeen #6;

Re: FISHING KIT
Been playing with fishing again.
the top hooks I forged.
the bottom I made from some nails and then retempered.
the floats to the right were made from some turkey quills that I had hoped to make into fletching... but were unsuitable so I converted them into fishing floats. I hate throwing things away when I can repair, reuse and recycle into something else.
The midde hooks were made from some large clamshells I found at a lakeshore while camping. I managed to get these from the shell but don't know how they will work.
I clipped some hook spines from a fish-hook barrel cactus hoping to use them but the spines refused to curve properly. So i boiled them hoping that I could soften the spines, curve them and let them cool in the new shape. Total failure!
Though some mesquite tree thorns made decent needles. When I get some pine pitch, I'll put heads on the smaller thorns and make straight pins.
Those who give up a little freedom in place of a little security will soon discover that they possess neither.

Re: FISHING KIT
They've got some hooks for our time period, as well as LINEN FISHING LINE in three lengths, for pretty cheap. Cool find!
AND, might I add, they fuel another historical world I'm rather enamored with, separate-from-forum...Fly-Fishing. I love the early 1900's for reasons of my Grandfather's upbringing, a book about which is an ongoing labor of love of mine. 1920's fly-fishing is a big deal to me. This is a great resource. Thanks.
