Got the perfect piece of cloak material?
Spent way too much, but totally in love with that wonderful wonderful wool?
Terrified to take the scissors to it?

Budget emergency blankets are *perfect* for sanity checking your layout before you cut the expensive stuff:

They're thin, itchy, scratchy, smell bad, and are just terrible and nothing you'd want on your bed or - God forbid - hanging off your shoulders for hours at a time.

But they drape about right, are a good "Rangery" color, and can give you a really good preview for what the real thing is gonna look like (and wear like) before you start cutting a nice piece of handspun.

They've already saved my bacon by reminding me to cut neckholes *way* smaller that I'd have guessed at first go.

Plus, they're even cheaper on eBay....I've used them for costume pattern mock-ups for years. :P

yep, totally a good idea to make it in something cheap first :P if you want to go even cheaper, heavy sack-cloth hangs mostly like wool and decorators canvas is passable

Smart! And then you can use the mock-up cloaks you make as loaner gear, to encourage newbies to get their own stuff ASAP!
(Kidding... mostly)
