For those not on Roland's patreon, he recently posted a fascinating article.

The most exciting part I think was the realization that much of the glassware sold as drinking beakers -

Most importantly, by hanging these glass lamps high, one actually gets light down onto one's worksurface, making things like hearth cooking after nightfall much easier.
