finished curly maple scabbard
The scabbard is now finished. It is wool lined, hand carved in Urnes style with an inset horse and wolf head at each end, stained with laurel mtn forge maple stain, with a hand rubbed oil finish using tried and true Oil varnish. The strap was heavily oiled with neatsfoot oil and is sporting a buckle I forged.
The scabbard is meant to be worn suspended from the baldric with a belt passing over it at the waist this is a very comfortable method of carrying the weapon for me. The scabbard retains the sword very well as you can see from the upside down pic and yet allows for a smooth draw. The mouth is wrapped in leather with a butt stitched rain and dust guard and the wool lining was charged with oil.

Very pretty! Well done.

Looks good, how is it when you have it on? Love the detail work.

I was gaping throughout looking at the photos, but my jaw broke clean off when I saw it next to your shield.
LOVE the curly maple, love the detail work, love the rigging, and absolutely love how it all goes together. Bravo.

That is a very beautiful scabbard my friend! Was it hard to make?

Outstanding work! How did you do the carving? Love your buckle, btw you should do a bunch and sell them!

Sweet brother. Your carvings are great. The finished product compliments the sword very well.

Re: finished curly maple scabbard
Many, many, kind thanks for the comments on the scabbard and buckle all told I would guess over 100 hours went into the whole rig counting drying time. Lacking much in the way of power tools well over 90% of this piece was done by hand. The carving tools I used were suggested to me a couple years ago by Jake Powning in a PM on SFI
As to buckles or even figured hardwood scabbards I can and will do them reasonably just shoot me a PM and we'll see what we can do. I really enjoy working with metal and figured hardwoods in the Norse and Celtic styles.
Again I thank each of you for the kind comments on my work

I may be a few seconds late on this, but that is AMAZING detail on the carving. Absolutely stunning.
And I'll agree with Greg on this, the best picture on here is the sword and shield together.

Well Dang R.D. That is an outstanding piece of work there! I hope my woodcarving skills get anywhere close to that good one day!
