So the cops called me today...
...on my cell phone.
"Yes, this is Bartholomew County dispatch. We'd like to speak to Gregory Lammers."
Weeeeeeeeird.
"Yeah, the Indianapolis DNR representative gave us your number."
Oooooooohhhkay...
"We've got a few highway patrolmen sitting on the highway by a big bird--a hawk, we think--that won't leave, and keeps walking out into traffic. DNR said you might be able to help."
NOW we're talking!
Art for Art's sake:
Used a tablecloth for starters...all I had in the car. Then, we dropped by my church, 'cause I knew I had a roll of masking tape in my sound booth to truss her up for the trip home.
Conned a few guys at church into helping hold things down, etc.
Female Juvenile Red-Tail. Just got her out of the jacket, ready to take a look and see what's wrong.
She's standing limply...if she was feeling well, she'd be nearly 10" taller...she's sagging (note the length of the drooping wings)...almost like a squat.
Last photo, I'm pointing at the joint where the radius and ulna connect to the joint which controls feather spread. Both bones are broken, and there's a bloody rough spot over the area. She's currently at a local raptor rehab center ~5 miles from my house, and if the wing is fixable, I'll be fostering her through her rehabilitation after surgery. If the joint is actually destroyed, they'll be putting her down.
We're about 50-50 on whether it was a gunshot or a car collision....x-rays will tell all.
*whew*
What a day!

Never a dull moment! Hopefully it's rehab and not euthanasia.

Holy cow, that's crazy! I sincerely hope they can fix the joint. Either way, good job for getting her the help she needs. Very cool!

Great that your wisdom was needed.

My money is on the collision.
I have seen so many of these and have actually just avoided a few myself!
The ecosystem that has emerged from the building of highways has all but replaced in many ways, the vergant meadows were raptors like the redtail and rabbits and even deer came to feed.
Now we have miles of it with all the parkways. It is a testimony to the adaptability of certain species but it is also sad that they have to deal with one more pressure...the automobile.
Good luck Greg! We will send hopes and prayers for your patient and hope she gets well enough for you to care for.

Re: So the cops called me today...
That is not the story I expected after reading the subject title for this post.
I think it's really cool that they gave you a call to bring your knowledge to the situation. Also I find it very caring that authorities even "bothered with a creature of lesser special status" - a very different mentality of most people in my area.
I hope for the hawk's recovery, good job Greg!

Now I understand the pic I liked on FB. Man I've got to get with it and come around more often! Any update on the situation? Hoping it is all working out well.

Ranger to the rescue!
In the darkest part of Sherwoods glade, in the thickest part of the wood, there are those who say, can still be seen, the ghost of Robin Hood.
