So continuing the theme of making ALL THE THINGS lately, I decided I needed a new pair of gloves!
And okay... so I only finished one, but hey, it’s better than nothing!
I may try to make a matching one for my right hand, but for the moment I already do have the glove from my Aragorn cosplay, which functions quite well - it’s just that it’s black, so it doesn’t exactly match. Even so, mismatched might be good in this case? Anyway, here’s the new glove! And after doing this project, I finally remember why I said I’d never make another glove after I made the one for the Aragorn cosplay, heh.
It’s technically made from an old couch, but it had a nice color and texture, and it’s good sturdy leather. I used the rough side of the leather for a long patch that covers the knuckles and part of the palm. I also added a small patch of heavier leather over the first knuckle. The main reason for these details was to help while using my bow. Longbows tend to have a lot of hand-shock, so some extra padding on the palm is always a big help, and since I’m shooting off the knuckle, I have learned from experience that a reinforcement where the arrow passes over the hand is an absolute must.
Anyway, here ya’ go! More stuff to come soon, no doubt!

That looks amazing and the lacing is a nice touch

Wow! That's awesome - I love it!!
You could probably answer this - I've the leather cut and dyed for a set of fingerless mitts - something in this direction - http://middleearthrangers.org/forum/vie ... =25&t=3253
... but I'm not certain about the stitching.
I see what you ended up with - but I'm curious how your explorations went.
For the main seams, do you find a standard "saddle stitch then turn inside out" is good enough? Or do you need to do some kind of edge-to-edge or overlapping stitch to keep the stitching from wearing at your hand?

Re: More new stuff! Glove-Edition!
Thanks! The whole design, including the lacing, is based heavily on the glove Aragorn wore in the movies, which I replicated a few years back as closely as possible, and have worn quite a bit since. I have found it to be an extremely practical design, so I decided to use it as the basis for my new glove(s) as well! Here are a couple pics of my replica:Iodo wrote:That looks amazing and the lacing is a nice touch
Okay, so the stitching is something I’m still kind of learning when it comes to gloves, and I’m not sure the methods I ended up on are technically the best methods... but for now they’ve worked fine for me.Elleth wrote:Wow! That's awesome - I love it!!

The long and short of it is, I sewed all the seams on the OUTSIDE of the gloves rather than sewing them inside out and then turning them. This eliminated the problem of the seams rubbing against fingers and such, but it also means that they get more wear and tear, since the stitching is all exposed. I also eschewed straight stitching of any kind - instead I whip stitched all the edges for extra strength, and along the side of the hand I doubled it, forming that X-shape along the edge.
If I were to do it again, what I might do instead is to lay that seam flat on top of itself and either saddle stitch it or do little X-stitches along the flat-felled edge - which, incidentally, is kind of what I did on the thumb. It has little X stitches on the inside, you just can’t see them, and what shows on the outside is the plain dash-lines. If that makes sense? Hopefully, haha! Honestly, the thumb ended up being one of the easiest parts, which I was definitely not anticipating. The thumb on my Aragorn glove was a total pain because it had that extra patch over the top.
